I remember the first time I had to cut my toddler’s hair--it was a bitter sweet time to try to cut those beautiful little curls! We did not have much money so going to the beauty shop or the Barber was not an option. I had bought a pair of hair cutting scissors when I was single and used an old towel to drape on her shoulder and around her neck. It was a bit scary at first, but honestly, toddlers don’t have a lot of hair and trimming it yourself is not that difficult. Here is what you need to do to start your own family beauty parlor:

·         Get everything ready before you start to cut: get your chair set up, get your towel, get your hair cutting scissors (regular household scissors don’t work so invest in a good pair of hair cutting scissors)

·         Set up some sort of entertainment: favorite movie, book, toy, play dough, bubbles, etc.

·         Rather than washing the hair, use a spray bottle to wet it down

·         Divide the hair in sections; front, back, sides (this will make cutting the squirmy toddler’s hair a lot easier)

·         Cut the front section first; the bangs, sides of the hair draping the face (start from outside of the eyebrows to the inside of the face)

·         Don’t take big snips, go slow and take small snips so that in case you make a mistake it is a little one

I used to have a special superman cape that was a part of old pajamas and I used it to cut my son’s hair. You can find those fun capes at garage sales or second hand stores (superhero pajamas with capes). Toddlers love to wear superhero capes and that might get them to sit still for a few minutes longer. You can offer a special treat to the toddler so that he/she has something to look forward to when they are done sitting for 10-15 minutes.

When you are done cutting the toddler’s hair give him/her a mirror to look at him/herself and make a big deal about how good he/she looks…lots of “ahs” and “oohs” Toddlers love to be photographed so after the haircut, take pictures and have fun.

Don’t stress over having a perfect hair cut, after all, hair grows quickly and even the best hair dressers have bad haircuts every now and then. I cut my children’s hair till they were in the middle school and no longer liked mom cutting their hair, but they still remember some of the trimming jobs I did and we have good laughs reminiscing.
