Sometimes parents are not sure at what age to start teaching their toddler proper dental hygiene.  It is never too early to start teaching your toddler how take care of those beautiful pearly whites.  After all, those healthy baby teeth lay the foundation for healthy permanent teeth. Healthy baby teeth are more than just a pretty smile, they are vital to maintaining proper spacing.  They are also crucial for the overall health of your toddler.  Proper nutrition and ability to enjoy a variety of foods depend on having healthy teeth and gum. Most pediatric dentists recommend toddlers brush their teeth twice a day using a soft bristle tooth brush.  By around 2-3 year old pea size amount of children’s fluoride tooth paste can be introduced.  Always supervise your toddler brushing his teeth to avoid swallowing toothpaste.  If the toddler is not able to spit out excess toothpaste, then purchase non-fluoridated toothpaste.

If you are struggling with your toddler brushing his/her teeth, follow these simple strategies:

  • Use a puppet to teach the importance of healthy teeth and gum.
  • Read fun books on tooth brushing (ask your local librarian to help you find some).
  • Let the child pick a special toothbrush (an electric toothbrush, character brushes).
  • Let the child pick special toothpaste (many wonderful flavors are on the market now).
  • Use a reward system of stickers, or star charts, etc.
  • Be a good role model.  Take time to brush with your toddler every day.
  • Limit intake of sugary foods and drinks and offer your toddler water throughout the day.
Take time to help your toddler care for his/her pearly whites by thoroughly brushing his teeth for him.  Children are not able to thoroughly brush their own teeth till they are about 7 years old.  You can begin regular dentist visits and make it a fun outing for you and your child.
