Where do I find the time to have some “Quality time” with my child?

Spending quality time with your school age child does not mean you have to stress over finding time in your busy daily schedule “set a date” with your child.  Every moment you are with your child, you can count as quality time.  When you spend time talking to your child about what you are planning for the day or what the child may be expecting at school and even the trips back and forth to school can be considered quality time.  On the way back from school is a perfect time to let your child share his/her day with you.  Oftentimes school age children need to be heard. Though issues may seem trivia to adults they are real issues for children.

Though you may not realize it, you are already spending quality time with your child.  For instance:

  • When you work on a project together like remodeling your child’s room, your closet or the kitchen and the bathrooms.
  • Growing a garden, planting flowers
  • Doing charitable work like delivering meals on wheels
  • Helping with homework
  • Cooking and eating together
  • Going to church as a family
  • Exercising together

You can also create a special family night.  We always had Fridays as our special family night. We made homemade pizza or French bread pizza and had a special movie or played games.  We also have Sundays as our special family day. My entire family (sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles) gather in our house after Church and we all help cook breakfast, and have very lively discussions over delicious breakfast.  We have had this tradition now for over 15 y ears and though all our children are grown, they still love to come over Sunday mornings and catch up on everybody.

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind is to trust yourself and be in tuned to your child.  Nobody knows your child like you do and if you notice your child is upset, sad, angry, withdrawn then take extra time that day to pay close attention to your child.  Maybe that would be the perfect day to set everything else aside, be spontaneous and have a fun date with you and your child only.
