The winter season brings new challenges for parents of preschoolers. During this time of year, it is important to remember two things:
- The younger the child, the more powerful the impact of stress, and
- Excitement and anticipation may result in stress just as negative situations may generate stress.
Preschool children may respond to stress by crying, having tantrums, clinging to parents, exhibiting excessive energy and even having toileting accidents. Often, stress or the resulting behavior may appear unrelated to a specific activity or situation. Extra activities and visits from friends and relatives may be fun and stimulating, but try to remain realistic and consider the following tips to restore calm!
- Do your best to stick with regular and predictable routines whenever possible, especially mealtimes and bedtime.
- Be reasonable about what you schedule during each day or week.
- Create a “waiting bag” for your preschooler; include easily accessible snacks, wipes, paper, crayons and some books. Also include a high protein snack like nuts or a granola bar for you.
- Take time to talk with your preschooler about changes in schedules or normal activities, and when appropriate, let them help you prepare for the activity.
- Make time to play and laugh.
- Find a sunny area indoors and snuggle in with your preschooler, a fun book and some popcorn or hot chocolate.
So enjoy the season, and remember to be realistic; no parent, preschooler or activity is perfect. In fact, it is those less than perfect moments that we tend to remember!
