How to Support Your Preschooler’s Social Emotional Development
Young children love animals and enjoy crossing the line between reality and fantasy. In this activity, you can provide your preschooler with an opportunity to explore their sense of self and to assert their independence by selecting a pet that is a perfect match for him. Ask your child if he could have any kind of pet in the world, real or unreal, what kind of pet would be perfect for him. Encourage him to draw a picture of his pet, and ask open ended questions about why he selected his special pet. (What is your pet’s name? Why did you choose this pet? What will you do with your pet? What does your pet eat? Where does your pet sleep? What tricks can your pet do? Does your pet have any special super powers?) Record your child’s story on the back of his drawing.
