Facilitate social emotional development by helping your preschooler create a Fantastic Family Book. For the first page, have your child draw a tree. Then, help your child draw leaves, pinecones or apples and put a family member’s name on each object. Rather than using a tree, you can also help your child trace their hand and encourage him to draw a family member on each finger. Remember to include extended family members and pets. For the book’s following pages, encourage your child to draw each member of the family and then dictate something about the person (such as what each person likes to do). Also, include drawings about what your family likes to do together or pictures illustrating important family traditions such as celebrating birthdays, holidays or summer vacations. Remember to encourage your child to include a picture of him doing his assigned household chore and to dictate a comment regarding how this assignment helps the entire family. For the book’s cover, help your child draw a house with all the family members in it, or help him draw a large heart with all the family members inside it. Now, the book is ready for binding with yarn, ribbon or string. These books make wonderful gifts for extended family members and are fun to look at in years to come!
