How to Support Your Infant’s Social Emotional Development
Even as young as three months, your baby’s increased movements, such as kicking and waving her hands, illustrate her developing body awareness. As she continues to become more aware of her body, it is a good time to begin identifying her basic body parts. It is important to note that your eye contact, voice and touch are very important to this activity. While your baby is in her crib or lying on the floor, touch her hand to your mouth and say “mouth.” Pause, and then touch her hand to her mouth and repeat “mouth.” You can then move on to her eyes, ears and nose. Keep in mind that her attention span may not last long and that if she gets fussy or fidgety, she’s probably had enough.
